Tips from the Web Farmer's Almanac
Where do you build your new web? Your local Internet Service Provider (ISP) will rent you space on their server for a nominal set-up fee and monthly rate. They may even provide a nice customer support person to help you get started over the phone. All of this for probably less than your local health club membership.
If you already have an e-mail account, you may have free web pages available. If you have a DSL or Cable connection, you may have megabytes of free web space available. Check your statement to see what your monthly fee pays for.
What is a domain? For $19 a year you can purchase a domain name and it’s yours as long as you want it. Your domain name is the www.yourdomain.com which links people to your web site. This is your address on the World Wide Web.
How do you build your web? Web editing tools are as numerous and varied as puppies. There are large breeds with all sorts of additional plug-ins, script managers and form handlers. These come with large manuals to help you avoid programming. There are also small editing tools to help you write your own HTML, DHML and Java scripts. Some web editing software provides a series of style sheet templates for you to choose from. These are great if you want to get the job done quickly. They can also be confining, if you want to develop your own style.
